With reference to Khushwant Singh’s Waiting for the President (June 30), it is not a question of ignorance about Pratibha Patil. What is the rationale behind fielding an elderly person, man or woman, as a candidate for head of a State. When you retire public servants at the age of 60, why should it be different for anyone else? Are there not enough talented young people?

Look within

The Amarnath Shrine Board has blamed global warming for the shrinkage of the Shivalingam, which stood 12 feet on June 18, to four feet on June 28. But human intervention that has aggravated the problem. In 1989, 12,000 pilgrims visited the Amarnath cave. This year, even before the yatra on June 30, nearly 50,000 persons have visited the cave. To shift the burden onto global warming and to ignore the Board’s own role is irresponsible.
