THE GOMTI Nagar police arrested a teacher and a retired Indian Air Force (IAF) official on Monday with three deerskins.

The duo was going to sell it off in Mumbai for Rs 6 lakhs. The gang has been engaged in slaying rare animals in Bahraich, Balrampur and Nepal border forests. The gang had also been engaged in smuggling the animals for last several years.
Station officer (SO) Manoj Pant was tipped off about the activities of the gang taking Lucknow route to dispose of the smuggled skins. After procuring the numbers of the gang members, Pant put their phones on surveillance.

While keeping watch on the movement of the gang, the cops came to know that two of the gang members were arriving on the state capital on Monday. The SO formed a team and laid a trap near Gomti Barrage as the miscreants had discussed about the route during a telephonic conversation.

The cops trapped two persons carrying a bag and searched it to find two skins of deer wrapped inside. The duo was taken to the police station where they confessed their involvement in a smuggling racket. They identified themselves as Rajendra Prasad Verma, a teacher in a primary school and resident of Dhanepur, Gonda and Gulshan of 477, Awas Vikas Colony, Gonda. Gulshan was retired from IAF recently.

In the course of interrogation, Rajendra and Gulshan revealed that Rehmat alias Baba was the leader of the gang who had engaged them in the racket a few months back. Baba and his aides used to kill the animals and smuggle the skins and other parts of the body across the country and abroad.

Gulshan revealed that Baba had struck a deal to sell off the skins to a Mumbai-based businessman and they were assigned the job to deliver it. A police team was dispatched to nab Baba and other members of the gang.
