Excitement beckons motorsport fans
Car rally buffs of the Capital can look forward to two days of thrill and entertainment over the weekend when the sixth leg of the Indian National Rally Championship, the MRF-Maruti Suzuki Rally of the North, is held in and around Gurgaon and Surajkund on November 20 and 21.
President of Motorsports Association of India (MAI) Nazir Hoosein said a total of 34 participants had confirmed their participation in the event, which will cover a total distance of 375km, including 106km of competitive or special stages.
Notable among the drivers from North India are Sandeep Sharma, Faraz Khalid, Philipose Mathai and Sunny Sidhu. The event, the first of its kind in Delhi, will see former Asia Zone champion VR Naren Kumar battle it out with stalwarts Vikram Mathais, Karandeep Singh and Lohit Urs.
After five rounds, Naren and co-driver D Ramkumar of Team MRF are leading the points tally with 30 points, thanks to victories at Bangalore and Goa. Mathais and Karandeep, also of MRF, are placed second and third respectively. All the rallyists will be driving the Maruti Baleno and the event is being organised by Northern Motorsport under the aegis of the MAI.
The ceremonial flag-off will take place from Ansal Plaza Amphitheatre on Nov 19 and the event starts from NH8 in Gurgaon.
