FESTIVE MOOD gripped the city on the eve of Holi on Tuesday, with people sprinkling colour, water and gulal on one other.

Major city markets witnessed a huge rush of last-minute shoppers.

Queues were witnessed at liquor shops in various localities. The district administration has ordered closure of liquor shops on March 15.

It has also geared up to maintain the peace during the festival. The administration was cautious in light of the Varanasi bomb blasts. People will set Holika ablaze from 8.30 pm onwards and the traditional procession of Narsingh Bhagwan will start from Ghantaghar crossing.

It will be led by BJP MP Yogi Adityanath. Since the procession will pass through densely populated minority localities, police are maintaining vigil on the route. A large contingent of policemen will accompany the procession to avert any untoward incident.

Communal violence had rocked the city three years ago when violence erupted after the Holi procession. The violence had claimed two lives.

A weeklong curfew was imposed on the city. Police are taking serious note of even minor incidents of scuffle to prevent any flare-up.

Senior superintendent of police Dipesh Kumar Juneja said four companies of the PAC and a company of the RAF would be deployed in hypersensitive areas.

He said police would maintain vigil to prevent brandishing of arms during religious processions. However, he was confident that peace-loving people of the city would foil any attempt to foment trouble.

The health administration has arranged beds in emergency wards and equipped them to cope with any situation. The municipality will maintain round-the- clock water supply on the occasion of Holi. Sources said the city was divided in 12 sectors which will be patrolled by police officials along with administrative officers.
