At least 12 people were killed when two express trains derailed while crossing a small bridge in Madhya Pradesh late on Tuesday.

Kamayani Express, en route to Varanasi from Mumbai, derailed near Harda, around 11.45pm, while the Janata Express coming from the opposite direction derailed around the same time.

Rescuers battled inclement weather and a dark night in their search for survivors. Although the exact reason behind the derailments is not yet known, railway officials said heavy rains in the past few days might have damaged railway tracks.
