Trading volumes were higher at Rs 44.1 billion as 1,690 stocks fell while 835 gained.

"The market's attention centred around Reliance, whose shares gained Rs 55 and rose by 6.3 per cent," said a dealer with a private-sector mutual fund.

Reliance is set to gain further on Wednesday, when the market will open before schedule in a special one-hour trading session.

Units of the firm will be demerged and eventually listed as five Reliance group companies.

This would change the market capitalisation for the parent firm which currently has the second highest weighting in the Sensex at 11.7 per cent.

Wipro fell Rs 10.7 or 2.33 per cent to 449.25.
