Five people were killed and nine others injured in four separate accidents in the city in the last 48-hours, police said.

The latest accident occurred in south Delhi’s Govindpuri on Monday. A 30-year-old unidentified man was mowed down by a speeding cluster bus.

After the accident, angry locals vandalised the bus and tried to set it on fire. They blocked traffic and shouted slogans against the police and transport department.

A police officer said the cluster bus on route number 429 was going to the Old Delhi railway station from Kalkaji when it mowed down a man crossing the road at 4.30 pm.

“The driver and conductor of the bus immediately fled. Several people gathered and began vandalising the bus. They tried to set the bus on fire, however, policemen foiled their attempt,” said the officer. Additional police personnel was sent to control the situation and disperse the mob.

Senior police officers also arrived at the spot and assured the agitated people that the errant driver would be nabbed. The victim’s body was sent to the AIIMS mortuary where it will be preserved for the next 72-hours for identification.

In the second accident, two people were killed and seven others hurt when a speeding car hit two auto rickshaws in which they were travelling.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning at Kashmere Gate.

Police said the errant driver, Akshay Saxena, manager with an IT company, lost control over his speeding vehicle that hit a divider before crashing into the auto rickshaws. The deceased were identified as Deepak Sharma, 27, and Kailash, 29. All the injured passengers were admitted to the Sushruta Trauma Center.

In northeast Delhi’s GTB Enclave, a 26-year-old man was killed and his friend was injured on Sunday night after they were hit by an unknown vehicle. The deceased was identified as Atul Kumar. He worked as a data operator with Doordarshan. His friend was identified as Vishal.
