With 10 more deaths, the toll in the current spell of floods in Bihar on Thursday mounted to 605 even as the overall flood situation in the state improved with floodwaters of major rivers receding.
State Disaster Management Department Sources said 10 deaths were reported from Darbhanga (4) and Sitamarhi (6) during the past 24 hours, taking the toll in the recent spell of floods to 605.
According a Central Water Commission report, major rivers like Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Kreh were still maintaining receding trends showing signs of further improvement in the situation.
The state government has sought Rs 8,000 crore central assistance for relief and rehabilitation in the 20 flood-hit districts where over 20 million people were affected by the floods that had caused extensive damage to the standing crops, and private and public property.
The state government submitted the demand to the 11-member central team, which is currently on a visit of the state to make an on-the-spot assessment of the flood situation and the damages caused by the deluge.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to the state on July 27 to take stock of the flood situation had said that on the basis of recommendations of the central team the Centre would provide financial assistance to the state.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav had met the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi recently and requested her to undertake a visit to the flood-hit areas in Bihar to personally see the misery of the people.
