About six thousand people had gathered on grounds of Mising Cultural Centre to watch a cultural programme to mark Ali Aye Ligang, the annual harvesting festival of Mising tribe.

Dhemaji police said the grenade was thrown by one of the two men on a motorbike. Additional DGP (Law and Order) of Asam Police D.K. Pathak said police have launched a massive manhunt to nab the culprits. “The needle of suspicion points to Ulfa,” said Pathak.

However, the banned Ulfa denied involvement in the incident. In an email to media houses on Sunday, the outfit military spokesperson Raju Barua blamed the government for the attack.

The Assam government has announced Rs 3 lakh in compensation to the families of each of the victims and Rs 5,000 each to the injured.
