THE STATE unit of the Gondwana Ganatantra Party had condemned the action of Bhopal Municipal Corporation in ‘destroying’ the chestnut (singhara) crop in the Upper Lake in the pretext of cleanliness, saying that this action has caused problem of livelihood for about 500 Manjhi community families who survive on this crop.

GGP senior State vice-president Dr Vanmali Verma and the state spokesman Rameshchandra Bokaria in a joint statement issued here said that the Manjhi community has been harvesting chestnut crop along with fishing in the Upper Lake since generations and its their source of livelihood. However, recently, the BMC carried out a drive under which the entire crop was plucked off from the lake, using a machine.

The press release said that the community members take an area of lake on an annual lease from the Bhojpal Matsya Udyog Sahakari Samiti at a cost of Rs 4.25 lakh.

The two leaders today visited the spot where the BMC action was undertaken and held discussions with the members of the Manjhi community. They have demanded Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan that the affected families be paid adequate compensation and in future the crop should not be destroyed.
