Comedy star Govinda Ahuja, who has acted in 60 films in 18 years, has now joined active politics as Congress candidate from Bombay North, a bastion of Petroleum Minister Ram Naik.

Pitted against BJP stalwart and five-time MP who is trying for a double hat-trick, Govinda faces a tough task but is confident. He is pinning high hopes on 22 lakh first-timers among its 22 lakh voters.

Congress picked the 'laughing star' when its original choice Minister of state for Home Kripashankar Singh wriggled out of contention, fearing a political waterloo.

Congress banks on Govinda's star status to win over front-row crowds in a constituency that spreads across Malad and Kandivli, Borivli, Vasai and tribal belt of Palghar.
