In an important clarification pertaining to the Haryana government's latest move to provide 10% reservation in government jobs each to five special backward classes and economically backward persons in the general category, the council of ministers on Wednesday spelled out that only 4% reservation would be given to beneficiaries of these categories in class-1 and 2 jobs under state government or government undertakings and local bodies.

An official said this had been done in tune with the percentage of reservation given in class-1 and 2 jobs to existing backward classes in the state. "In so far as reservation in jobs is concerned, 27% reservation is being provided to backward classes for class-3 and 4 jobs as per the existing policy on reservation.
However, in the notifications issued by the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes on the 10% reservation for special backward classes and economically backward persons in the general category, it has not been clarified whether this reservation is also to be given in class-1 and 2 jobs. The backward classes are being provided 10% reservation in class-1 and 2 jobs," an official said.
The matter subsequently was re-examined by the state government and it was recommended that the special backward classes and economically backward persons in the general category should be given reservation to the extent of 4% in class-1 and 2 jobs in each category.
