Dr Om Prakash Narayanan, 31, has reportedly confessed to stealing three high-end mobile phones of unsuspecting fellow doctors.

Police have recovered the stolen phones from his private clinic in Triplicane colony in central Chennai.

Narayanan, who was remanded in judicial custody on Monday, moved the magistrate’s court for bail on Wednesday. Now, he is an undertrial prisoner in the city’s Puzhal Central Prison.

Narayananan allegedly pinched the phones at Global Hospital in Tambaram, near the airport, on Sunday. He had recently joined the hospital at a salary of Rs 85,000 per month.

When police confronted Narayananan with CCTV footage showing him pocketing the phones, he confessed and handed them over, said inspector V Vimalanathan.

A police official who did not want to be named said the doctor, who is from a very rich family, was going through divorce proceedings and may have been in a disturbed state of mind when he picked up the phones.

Narayananan could face three months’ simple imprisonment, police said. The TN Doctors’ Association has barred Narayanan from practising till his case is disposed of.
