Headmistress arrested for selling mid-day meal rice

The headmisress of a government school in Orisa's Bhadrak district was arrested on the charge of selling rice meant for providing mid-day meal to students, police said in Bhadrak on Friday.

The arrest was made on Thursday based on a complaint by a villager against Biswamaitree Nayak, headmistresss of UGME School at Khankihat in Tihidi police station, the police said.

The complaintant Ghanashyam Panigrahi alleged the headmistress had despatched six bags of rice meant for mid-day meal in a trolley from the school to Tihidi market for sale.

"I informed the block development officer Tihidi and block staff, after which the police rushed to the market and seized the rice bags-laden trolley", Panigrahi said.

On interrogation, trolley puller Chakradhar Behara said the headmistress had sent the rice and asked him to sell it to a vendor Gayadhar Lenka, PK Jena, IIC, Tihidi said.

A case has been registered against the headmistress. She was sent to jail custody after her bail plea was rejected, the police said.
