In what will come as a big relief to aspirants, the staff committee of Hindu College decided on Friday to go ahead with admissions under sports and extra-curricular activities (ECA) quota.

The new resolution comes after the college governing body had earlier decided to suspend these for two years following reports of irregularities in sports admission last year.

The college had allegedly admitted more students than the university approved quota of 5%.

Teachers, however, have been protesting against the governing body’s decision since the beginning of the month, and are on a relay hunger strike against the policies of the governing body members.

The quota is part of admission guidelines, which have to be followed by the colleges that come under it, they had said.

The agitating teachers had met university officials regarding the matter on Thursday.

“The ECA and sports quota cannot be suspended on anybody’s whim. They are part of the university guidelines to ensure that talented students get a chance to study in a college and course of their choice. We will direct the college to conduct these admissions,” said a senior university official on condition of anonymity.

A clarification was also issued by the university authorities in this regard on Friday.

“The university has separate cells for cultural activities and sports. How can the governing body arbitrarily do away with the quota? If there were irregularities, we should ensure they do not happen again. Suspending these admissions is not the solution,” said Suchitra Gupta, member of the staff council and head of the university cultural panel.

Hindu College has popular debating, dramatics and music society. The sports field of the college was also renovated during the Commonwealth Games and was used as a practice venue.
