Bollywood’s teen icon Vivek Oberoi has always believed in following his instincts as an actor. So what if he has spent a year in New York taking a course in film studies and direction – in reality, Vivek is not a method actor at all. Along with dad Suresh Oberoi, he considers Amitabh Bachchan as the most important person who has shaped up his acting career, apart from, of course, filmmaker Ramgopal Varma.

Vivek was a Bollywood buff right from his school years and he grew up watching Amitabh Bachchan films. “I dreamt then that some day I’d get to do a film with him. I remember how people used to compare my dad’s voice with Amitabh Bachchan’s deep baritone. When the two of them did Laawaris together, I think that doubt was dispelled forever. Dad used to say how Mr Bachchan was always a perfect gentleman and what a true professional he was. Dad worked with him again in Coolie and a couple of other films. It was around this time that I saw Mr Bachchan once on the sets of Coolie probably. But as a child I was easily intimidated by a star and I never even got close enough to him to get an autograph!” recollects Vivek.

Vivek says that he has seen most of Amitabh Bachchan’s films barring “the odd Geraftar or Inquilab”. “I’ve seen films all his big films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Deewar, Trishul, Kala Paththar and Don several times on video. He simply towered over all the other stars. I think no one had that kind of charisma and our generation of stars are still trying to step into his shoes, or simply imitate him. As an actor he is one of the best we’ve ever had and I think we can be forgiven for being intimidated by him,” he adds.
Vivek says now it looks like “I might be finally working with him in a film” with Aishwarya Rai. “Things are not finalised yet and I can’t say anything for sure. But it does look like finally I’ll get to share the same sets with Amitabh Bachchan.”
