The State Educational Management and Training Institute (SEMAT) has evolved a new scheme for enabling teachers to become eligible for the post of principal.

The institute has introduced a six-month diploma course for teachers. Such diploma holders would be given preference at the time of selection of principal at a college.

Over 20 teachers from city schools and colleges have joined the course to get an opportunity for being appointed as principals in schools. Though the course started in 2005, now SEMAT has submitted a fresh proposal to the State Government for ensuring 10 per cent weightage to diploma holders. It is believed that the government would soon give its sanction to SEMAT.

Teachers and their leaders have hailed the decision of SEMAT and have urged the government to approve the proposal so that the posts of principals lying vacant could be filled up. They expressed concern over the delay caused in filling up the vacancies which vitiated the teaching environment in many schools and colleges run by acting principals or by officiating principals.

According to them, in the absence of permanent principals in schools, the number of students has constantly been falling and if this situation persisted for a long time, most schools would be closed down.
