IIT-K scientists to demonstrate technology today

SCIENTISTS AT the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) would give a live demonstration of two chief projects relating to railway technologies developed through collaborative efforts of the IIT-K and the RDSO, Lucknow, at Ajgain Railway Station (near Lucknow), on February 24.

Technology Mission on Railway Safety (TMRS) coordinator Nalinakash S Vyas said, “The two technologies will be demonstrated for actual trains running on the sector.”

Dr Vyas said the first technology was known as Wheel Impact Load Detection (WILD) Instrumentation System. The project plan was developed about two years back to develop technology for wheel impact load detection including detection of wheel flats.

Under this technology, a prototype system was developed and was installed at a railway station 20 km away from Lucknow.

The second technology is Satellite Imaging for Rail Navigation (SIMRAN) for locating the exact location of the trains on track.

Dr Vyas said the train tracking system would enable an effective way of monitoring every train in certain geographical boundary for its location, speed and direction of movement. The information obtained could be used in a variety of ways like better controlling of trains and passengers information. This includes implementation of GPS, GSM and RF based instrumentation to each train and communication arrangements to the centralised locations. This would help to get the real time train running information to the railway users and the authorities as well.
