The committee comprises five BJP and two Congress corporators. Surprisingly, while rules call for the post to be filled by a secret ballot cast by members, Rajendra Jaiswal, one of the leading contenders said the candidate would be selected by the ‘party and organisation’.
The election announcement comes in the wake of protests at delay in electing a chairman by Congressmen during the last IMC General Council meeting.
Section 131 of the MP Municipal Corporation Act-1956 charges the Accounts Committee with examining the Corporation’s income-expenses as well as scrutinising reports submitted by auditors appointed by the IMC.
The Act further says that committee members are to be elected under a system of proportional representation and shall elect a Chairman from among themselves through a secret ballot.
Sushila Dewang, Nandu Pahadia, Savita Akhand, Punia Karetia and Rajendra Jaiswal are the five BJP members, while Bante Yadav and Ramesh Gagre are the two Congressmen.
