India will speak to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about civil nuclear cooperation and seek Tokyo’s assistance for an unconditional waiver from the Nuclear Suppliers Group. “We will be talking to Japan about civil nuclear energy cooperation and about (a waiver from) the NSG,” Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon said at a briefing on the forthcoming visit of Abe beginning Tuesday.

Menon declined to comment on negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency, saying a bureaucrat cannot comment on something that “is on a whole different plane.”

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will host a “private dinner” for Abe on Tuesday at which Japan’s support for India at the NSG is likely to come up.
