Talwinder Singh, 20, was shot at twice by the policeman and arrested on multiple charges, said reports. Singh's condition was stable and he was recovering at a local hospital.

The sergeant was sleeping at his home last week when his wife woke him upon hearing noises. The cop went outside to investigate and found Singh holding a metal bar.

When Singh refused to drop the bar, the police official shot him twice in the leg.

"It's early, but the shooting appears to be within department guidelines," an NYPD police officer said.

Singh was on Sunday charged with attempted burglary, criminal mischief, attempted assault and weapons possession. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted, according to a police spokeswoman.
