ACTRESS AND Samajwadi Party candidate Jaya Bachchan was re-elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha here on Thursday, barely three months after her disqualification opened a Pandora’s box on the office of profit issue.
Another SP candidate Amir Alam Khan was also declared elected unopposed.
Returning officer Rajendra Prasad Pandey made the declaration after the closure of withdrawal of nominations at 3 pm.
Revenue Minister Ambika Chaudhary received the election certificate from the returning officer on behalf of Jaya Bachchan. Khan, however, received his certificate personally. The re-election of Bachchan was being considered a certainty as no other political party fielded a candidate. The by-election to the two Rajya Sabha seats was necessitated following the Election Commission’s decision to disqualify Bachchan and the subsequent resignation of Samajwadi Party-supported Independent MP Anil Ambani from the Rajya Sabha.
Bachchan was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004. But, the Election Commission disqualified her from the Rajya Sabha following a complaint filed against her for holding an office of profit as the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council chairperson. As the office of the UPFDC chairperson was not exempted from the purview of the office of profit, Bachchan tendered her resignation from the post before filing her nomination papers for the by-election this time.
