Former cricketer Kapil Dev has emerged the front-runner to contest the South Delhi Lok Sabha seat on the Congress ticket.

The seat party has not won in its last five attempts. The last Congress leader to win this seat was Arjun Singh in 1985. Congress circles say that Kapil is their best bet since he continues to be immensely popular particularly among youth, is a known face and even a voter of South Delhi.

If chosen, he will be pitted against BJP's veteran leader Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra, whose attempts to shift to his old Delhi Sadar constituency has already been rejected by his party.

Called Haryana Hurricane, ever since Kapil Dev took to cricket in the late 70's to the time he called it quits in the mid 90's, he was one of the leading all rounders in the game. He held the record for the most number of Test and One day wickets for quite a long time till Courtney Walsh and Wasim Akram took over respectively.

Captaining India to win the Prudential World Cup in 1983 obviously was the highlight of his illustrious career. Other highlights would include leading India to 2-0 series win to beat a strong England side in England in 1986.
