External affairs minister S.M. Krishna will travel to Beijing for a four-day visit in April next year to strengthen bilateral ties, picking up the strings from the Copenhagen climate summit where the two countries worked “closely and effectively”.

President Pratibha Patil will also travel to China in May. Also on the cards is a series of other goodwill gestures, including people-to-people contact.

Chinese ambassador Zhang Yang and Krishna will on Wednesday discuss celebrations of 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechi had a telephone conversation with Krishna on Tuesday evening. They discussed India-China cooperation on climate change, including possible follow-on measures from the Copenhagen summit.

Krishna recalled to his Chinese counterpart that the two countries had worked “closely and effectively” together at Copenhagen, safeguarding the interests of developing countries.
