Kumar Sangakarra is a dependable left-handed batsmen and wicket-keeper, who also bowls useful off spin.
He came to international cricket in July 2000, when he took Romesh Kaluwitharan's place in both the one-day and Test side.
He represented the country at the junior level against India in 1997, before playing in the 'A' team against Zimbabwe 'A' in May 2000.
His performance against Zimbabwe attracted the attention of the national selectors, especially after a brilliant hundred in the one-day series against Zimbabwe.
He made his one-day debut in the Singer Triangular Tournament against Pakistan at Galle International Stadium. Throughout the series he batted excellently and kept wickets well.
He is now well on his way to establishing himself as a top batsman. He has a brilliant double century, 230 to his credit.
