Life limps back to normal in Mumbai

After three days of rain fury, life in the metropolis is slowly getting back on tracks with improvement in weather conditions since Monday night, even as the toll due to heavy rains in the city rose to 429.

The cloud cover over Mumbai region has begun to decrease but the gusty winds will continue to blow at about 50 km per hour, the Meteorological office said.

However, the fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as it will continue to be rough to very rough, the weather office said adding Signal flag No 3 indicating the danger had been hoisted along the coast.

Till 8.30 am, the rainfall recorded in Colaba was 86.8 mm while Santa Cruz recorded 149.5 mm, it added.

Fifty-nine people were reported missing, according to Mantralaya control room.

The suburban rail services were today restored on Central, Harbour and Western Railway sections. While trains on the Harbour line trains are plying from CST to Andheri and Panvel, the Central Railway is running services up to Kalyan, officials said.

Flight operations also improved though the airport was shut for a brief period from 5 am to 5.45 am due to poor visibility, airport sources said.

The schools and colleges were declared closed for the second day.

Trading at Bombay Stock Exchange commenced on a normal note and attendance in offices was reported to be better than Monday.
