IT’S OFFICIAL now. The Lucknow University (LU) convocation will be held on February 6. Union Human Resource Development minister Arjun Singh will be the chief guest.

The varsity had received the minister’s formal consent and necessary approval from Raj Bhawan, said Pro V-C RS Yadav on Monday. With this, preparations have begun on the campus to make the event successful.

Controller of examination RBS Verma said 188 medals, including three key medals, would be awarded. Besides, six honorary degrees would be conferred on distinguished people of various fields. Only final touches were being given to ensure a successful function, he said.

Learning a lesson from last year’s controversy over the coveted Chancellor’s gold medal, the varsity followed elaborate procedures before finalising names for the three most prestigious medals this time. “We’ve interviewed some of the candidates and assessed them in many areas before finalising their names,” he said.

Thus, the LU administration is hoping for a controversy-free convocation this time. Last year, there were quite a few claimants for the Chancellor’s gold medal. The candidates sought Raj Bhawan’s intervention, following which a committee was constituted to look into the matter. As a result, the Chancellor’s medal was not awarded during the convocation.
