Distraught over separation from his wife, a 21-year-old man swallowed the 'Mangalsutra' given by her, leading to his hospitalisation at Kumbakonam, 190 km from Madurai, to remove the four gram gold pendant.

Police said Velmurugan was in love with Usha (21) married her on October 31 at the Shiva temple at Kandharvakottai village.

Following a complaint from Usha's father that his daughter had been kidnapped, the couple surrendered at the Kumbakonam police station. Police, who talked to them, said the two agreed to stay apart following which Usha removed the pendant and gave it to Velmurugan.

Velumurugan said he was disappointed with the police 'attitude' and alleged that he was forced to get separated from his wife. He was distraught when Usha removed the mangalsutra and gave it to him and so decided to end his life by swallowing the pendant.
