MIRACLES DO happen in Lucknow University (LU). But, when about 300 students find place on the merit list without appearing in the LUMAT test or interview, it is more than a miracle! About 2067 candidates had applied for admission. One candidate had left his answer booklet blank during the written test. But, he was called for interview and selected. He was allotted BPA. Only five candidates had applied under Physically Handicap (PH) category.

About 2067 candidates had applied for admission. One candidate had left his answer booklet blank during the written test. But, he was called for interview and selected. He was allotted BPA. Only five candidates had applied under Physically Handicap (PH) category. Only two actually appeared in the interview. But, about nine candidates have been admitted to different courses under PH category! Similarly, three candidates had originally applied under FF (Freedom Fighter) category. But, 10 candidates have been admitted under the category!

These are some of the findings of the committee that probed the alleged anomalies in the LUMAT 2006 counselling. The aforesaid facts are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

A candidate (roll number 5571), who was ranked 186th having secured 88 marks (64 in written test and 24 in interview) was admitted. But, he was marked absent on the verification form.

The report said a cursory analysis of first 24 candidates under general category suggests that instead of all being offered admission to the high-priority course such as BBA, only 13 were admitted to BBA, six candidates were admitted to BMS, four to BBA (IB), and one to BPA. Fees were received as late as July 13, whereas the actual counselling took place upto July 7.Several admissions were done on the basis of superfluous claims of candidates. For instance candidates swiftly changed their category from general to SC/OBC/FF/PH. As per the records out of the total number of 2067 applicants, only 336 applied under OBC, 135 applied for SC/ST, 3 applied for FF (Freedom Fighter), 5 PH (Physically Handicap), 7 UE (University Employee and 4 CT (College Teachers). But several manipulations were done, the probe panel stated.

The committee also observed there exist 157 SC and OBC candidates who have obtained marks above the general category cut-off level. Calculation errors were detected in about 100 cases.
