Many reservations
Apropos of On shaky ground (April 14), increasing quotas is just another example of politicians trying to corrupt higher institutions of learning for minor gains.
Apropos of On shaky ground (April 14), increasing quotas is just another example of politicians trying to corrupt higher institutions of learning for minor gains. The fact that even the quota students in IITs do not approve of this unconstitutional act says a lot about the intentions behind its introduction.

What use is the NPT?
Iran’s announcement of its nuclear status has not been given due attention by the media (Iran won’t stop enrichment, April 14). Now it is clear that there are many countries which are engaged in the development of nuclear capability, some who have not yet declared it. Under these circumstances what purpose is being served by the NPT.

Real-life hero
Hats off to 18-year-old Md. Javed who sacrificed his life while saving four children at the Meerut trade fair blaze (Hero dies in hospital, April 14). Indeed, it was a courageous act. His family deserves special treatment from the state and central government.

It was terrible to read of Javed losing his life after saving four children at the trade fair. But he still could not get front page space, which was taken up by Salman Khan. Who is the great hero here? Are these the values we are passing to our young generation?

This has reference to the editorial Infernal apathy (April 12). A major tragedy has come and gone, compensation package has been immediately announced and a few officers have been transferred. Another inquiry has been ordered, which will take its own time, and people will by then forget about the event.
But no politician and administration officials have expressed an apology or even regret at such an avoidable loss of human lives. We have learned no lessons.

Such a big calamity fell upon us due to the careless attitude of organisers and administration. But the biggest shock was to see the police lathi-charge those searching for their relatives.
