As part of their token protest, medical students and resident doctors have decided to wear black ribbons till May 12. The medicos of IMS-BHU are also in regular touch with the doctors of Delhi for future course of action. The irate medicos said they would continue their protest till the proposal of enhancing reservation was not withdrawn.
Students of IMS-BHU and Law faculty had torched the effigy of Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh to register their protest against the proposal of Union Government to enhance reservation from existing 22 per cent to 49.5 per cent in Central government funded institutes on Tuesday evening.
Raising slogans such as ‘Stop dividing nation on the basis of caste’, ‘Stop Quota Prevent Mediocrity’ and ‘Let Merit Speak for Itself’, the medical students took out a rally on IMS premises and crushed the effigy of Arjun Singh.
Later, the medical students also staged a dharna on the IMS premises. A number of security personnel of BHU Proctorial Board were deployed to avoid any crisis during the agitation.
Besides, several students of Law faculty torched the effigy of Arjun Singh in front of the BHU main gate and criticised the alleged appeasement policy of the Union Government. The students were carrying placards conveying message such as ‘Reservation is Not Social Justice’, ‘Raise the voice otherwise silence will kill you’ and ‘Arakshan hatao, desh bachao’, etc.
The agitated students were of the view that the proposal to enhance reservation by 27.5 per cent is a politically motivated decision. They said that instead of enhancing reservation in higher education, the Centre should ensure better primary education for the deprived class.
Students of the Institute of Technology had staged a three-day ‘Pen Down Movement’ from April 12 to 14 to protest the proposal of enhancing reservation in Central government funded institutes. As part of their protest, the IT-BHU students had also boycotted their sessional exam.
