Around 80 per cent beds of almost all the wards were almost deserted. There were only three patients in the 40-bedded emergency ward of SS Hospital at 11.30 am. Senior consultants could perform only emergency operations due to the protest strike. Besides, OPD and emergency services, the intensive care unit (ICU) and coronary care unit (CCU) were also affected. The inflow of patients has adversely been affected due to media reports about the ongoing protest agitation. As a result of the medicos’ strike, very few patients were seen at out patients department (OPD) wards of urology, paediatrics, medicine, gynaecology, surgery and other wings today.

However, agitated medicos shifted their own parallel OPD ward from IMS premises to SS Hospital’s OPD ward today. The medical students continue to extend medical services from various counters of the parallel OPD ward.

As part of their ongoing anti-reservation campaign, the undergraduate and postgraduate students of IMS-BHU under the banner of Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) took out a motorcycle procession and informed the public about the adverse impact of reservation policies here in the city on Thursday.

“Freedom is never free, if we are not willing to struggle for our dignity then we don’t deserve freedom. Though we, the youth don’t form 100 of our current population, we do form 100 per cent of future. Indian youth is rising now ........in Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, UP....... against corruption, against injustice........and we are not going to let them stand alone,” read the handbill which the agitators were distributing to the public.

“Government is playing the politics of votes but we will not let it happen. If from any corner of your heart you think whatsoever is happening in this country is wrong and our protest against the unjust policy of government is right, please do support us,” added the hand bill. “Our only demand from government is to withdraw its proposal to ensure quality education,” said RDA members and added they would continue their strike till their demands were not fulfilled.

The RDA members have also turned down the appeal of IMS Director, Prof. Gajendra Singh and Medical Superintendent of SS Hospital, Prof. Churamani Gopal to call off their strike.

Front president Din Dayal Tripathi, who led the activists, said plans were afoot to launch a statewide agitation. He said workers had fanned out to the rural areas to explain to people the drawbacks of the policy. He claimed the front was gaining public support in Gorakhpur and Basti divisions. He said thousands of youths were ready to make any sacrifice to oppose the government’s policy.
