Senior party leader and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beig proposed her name, which was seconded by senior vice president Rangil Singh and endorsed by the 210 delegates including 40 special invitees, a PDP spokesman said.

In her address, Mehbooba said her party is going to "create a niche in the politics of subcontinent through massive support".

She said her claim was based on the party's performance.

Ridiculing National Conference's criticism of PDP, she said the former party is concealing is grave failures by resorting to PDP-bashing and populist sloganeering, to again hoodwink people's opinion.

"PDP is the first political party in Jammu and Kashmir which created balance between economic development and people's urge for political dignity," Mehbooba claimed.
