When asked, Additional SP (Ghazipur) HN Singh denied the involvement of Naxals in the attack. He said some miscreants were involved in the attack and have been identified for arrest.
Police team of Gahmar police station was going somewhere to conduct a raid in connection with a murder in the same area on Tuesday evening. Four constables had been called by the station officer to reach the police station at the earliest to join the police team.
As the four constables on separate motorcycles were passing by the area, a gang of miscreants equipped with rods and lathis attacked the constables and injured them. The injured constables made an abortive attempt to challenge the miscreants but they fled taking advantage of darkness.
On getting information, the police force from throughout the district reached the spot and launched a massive combing operation in the area throughout the night but they could not be traced.
On the instruction of the ASP, several police teams conducted raids in different parts of Ghazipur and surrounding districts on Wednesday but no arrests were made till the filing of this report.
