COHORTS OF a former Allahabad University (AU) student, who was recently refused admission to the varsity as a research scholar, hurled abuses and threatened AU dean (Science) Prof Hari Prakash with a country-made weapon in the Department of Physics, before absconding on Thursday.

Upset over the incident, angry students of the university's Science Faculty walked out of their classrooms and boycotted classes for the rest of the day.

The incident took place at around 11.45 a.m. when Dean (Science) Prof Hari Prakash was taking a class in the Physics Department and when over half-a-dozen miscreants suddenly started creating a ruckus outside his class. Prof Hari Prakash came out of his classroom and asked them not to disturb the teaching upon which the miscreants questioned him as to why was he not allowing admission to their candidate.

Prof Hari Prakash urged them to meet him later to enquire about the matter and returned back to teach in the class. The miscreants again started to disturb the class, forcing Prof Hari Prakash to come out of his class once again.

It was then that the miscreants threatened him for daring to refuse admission to Siraj Sheikh, an MSc (Chemistry) pass-out of the varsity, who wanted to pursue research in the Chemistry department. Even as Prof Hari Prakash tried to explain that Siraj was denied admission due to his poor percentage in MSc and only after being rejected by the Research Departmental Committee (RDC), one of the miscreants whipped out a country-made weapon and reportedly threatened to shoot him.

Meanwhile, hearing the ruckus some research scholars and students too started to gather at the spot and this forced the miscreants to flee from the scene, issuing threats to Prof Hari Prakash.

"I then personally informed the vice-chancellor about everything," said Prof Hari Prakash recounting the "sorry incident".

After being informed about the incident, AU proctor Prof HN Mishra along with cops and security personnel rushed to the Physics department and enquired about the incident.

As the news of the incident spread on the campus, angry students came out of their classrooms and boycotted classes demanding immediate action against the culprits.

On being contacted, AU proctor Prof HN Mishra confirmed the incident and said, "As soon the news of the incident reached me, we rushed to spot but by then they had fled. The miscreants are believed to have been from the Muslim Boarding and we have decided to handle the matter very strictly. A raid on the hostel is being planned and we have decided to lodge an FIR against Siraj Sheikh and his cohorts," he said.

After coming to know about the incident, AU vice-chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe went to Prof Hari Prakash's office to inquire about it. Later, the VC also attended a meeting of the science faculty teachers in which the incident was unanimously condemned. The teachers also demanded legal and disciplinary action against the culprits within the next 48 hours, adequate security for the dean (science) and review of the security arrangements in Physics department and the science faculty of the varsity.
