As the Centre's representative, his recent meeting with NSCN(I-M) leader Issac Chishi Swu and other north-east militant leaders in Bangkok has played a crucial role in pushing the north-east peace process forward. "I'm optimistic that Centre-Naga peace process would continue smoothly and talks with other rebels would commence soon," he had said after the meeting.
Leader of the powerful Mizo National Front since 1990, Zoramthanga has never lost any election in the state since he joined the mainstream politics. He led his party to victory in 1998 assembly polls and become the fifth Chief Minister of Mizoram.
A brilliant student who went on to become headmaster of a school at just over 17 years of age and then finally the chief minister in 1998, Zoramthanga has come up the stream of life the hard way, working even in a stone quarry during his college days.
A trusted of lieutenant of illustrious 'Mizo movement' leader Phu Laldenga, Zoramthanga's entry to politics can be traced to what is now known 'Mizo disturbance of 1966' when he went underground as part of a 'Mizo National Front movement' and took to jungles.
In 1990, when Pu Laldenga died, he became the President of Mizo National Front. Though he sometimes went through difficult times, he has since continued to be the President of the MNF to this day.
