THE URBAN Administration and Development Department has directed the Bhopal Municipal Corporation to pay the electricity bills every month and inform the same to the State Government before fifth of every month. In obvious retaliatory move, the BMC authorities are also planning to write a letter to the MPSEB asking for the dues of Rs 25 crore as rent for electricity polls inside the municipal limits.

Mayor Sunil Sood said that these dues should be adjusted against the future electricity bills of street lights and power consumption at filtration plants and pump houses. On earlier occasions, the MPSEB had declined to pay the rent on the electricity polls. The MPSEB officials said that the BMC can not impose rent on these polls.

However, the BMC officials said that the electricity polls are exempted from the property tax and the BMC is claiming the dues of rent. The decision to impose the rent was taken by the BMC's general council in year 1997. But the dispute on this issue could not be sorted out so far.

The BMC has to pay an amount of Rs 2.10 crore every months for the electricity consumption. The BMC consumes power worth Rs 90 lakh per month only at Kolar Filtration Plant. Besides, the BMC also pays an amount of Rs 40 lakh per month for the street lights and Rs 80 lakh as electricity bills for other filtration plants and tube-wells.
