The music launch of JP Dutta’s Umrao Jaan on Saturday night was a star studded affair as Aishwarya Rai was making an appearance in front of the Mumbai media after eight months. And with co-star Abhishek Bachchan in London, the Big B stepped in for the occasion.
Lata Mangeshkar too graced the occasion. When she was asked to release the album, she removed her footwear before doing the honours. When a stampede ensued to photograph Ash, the actress said, “You have to help each other. I have come here to give interviews. If you don’t allow me to, they will take me away.”
Anu Malik confessed that the film’s music was the toughest composition for him throughout his decade long career. He said, “All the tracks from Khayyam’s Umrao Jaan are still being appreciated by the connoisseurs of classical Indian music and it is certainly no mean feat to match the legendary composition.”
The lyrics have been written by Javed Akhtar, the film has eight new tracks. As the CD was released and the cover unveiled, one thing that caught everyone’s attention was a name in the list of singers. In the present times, when each song is sung by a different singer, Alka Yagnik, sings all the songs in the film except a couple and bags a biggie as the voice of legendary Umrao Jaan.
She says, “Ashaji’s singing in Umrao Jaan can’t be compared with anyone but it is certainly an honour for me that I got opportunity to sing the songs for one of the biggest films of this era.”
