Providing an insight into the 'functioning' of self-help organisations in the state, Nagaland minister for planning and urban development Shürhozelie Liezietsu has said many co-operative societies in Nagaland were involved in getting "subsidies, grants and easy money" from the state government.

Some individuals even own as many as 20 registered cooperative societies simply for the purpose of availing financial assistance from different sources, the minister said while addressing the 52nd All India Cooperative Week celebrations in Kohima.

Expressing concern over the number of fake societies that existed in the state, Liezietsu said that the government would review the activities of these cooperatives. "Cooperative societies can play a vital role towards uplifting the economy of the country, particularly in the socio-economic development of the rural poor," the minister stated, calling on NGOs of the state to work as per the principles, value and spirit of the cooperative movement.
