Nation remember martyrs of Kargil on Vijay Diwas

Nation remembered the brave officers and soldiers on the 7th anniversary of 'Operation Vijay Diwas', who laid down their lives for the country.

Vijay Diwas was observed with usual military fervour at Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia.

'Operation Vijay', the Indian answer to evict Pakistani intrusion in Drass and Battalik Sectors was launched in May 1999.

Lieutenant General Deepak Kapoor, General Officer in command northern Command, while addressing the special Sainik Sammelan at Drass War memorial, recounted the contribution made by the brave officers and soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

He said, "it was on this day that the Indian army added a new chapter to the annals of our long and cherished tradition of dauntless courage and bravery by evicting the enemy from the icy peaks along the Line of Control."

The function commenced in the morning with the wreath laying ceremony at the magnificent Drass War Memorial, at the base of the famous Tololing feature.

The memorial has been constructed by the army in memory of the brave sons of the soil.

Lieutenant General JK Mohanty, the Corps Commander and Major General VS Tonk, the Division Commander also paid their respects to the martyrs.

GL Batra, father of late Capt Vikram Batra, Param Vir Chakra, Gopichand Pandey, father of late Capt Manoj pandey, Param Vir Chakra, Colonel (Retired) VN Thapar, father of valiant Capt Vijayant Thapar, Maha Vir Chakra and Kelshing Peter, father of late Capt KC Clifford Nogrum, Maha Vir Chakra also laid wreaths on this occasion.

Jalajya Vishwanathan, wife of late Lieutenant Colonel Vishwanathan, Vir Chakra, Kiran Adhikari, wife of late Major Rajesh Adhikari and a number of war widows also attended.
