The US and India, both democracies, are natural allies. The nuclear deal shows that tremendous progress has taken place since the Cold War era. India, particularly, has commenced playing an active role in the global world. However, it should tread carefully to ensure that the relationship stays beneficial.

I was shocked to see the photo of US sniffer dogs at Gandhi’s samadhi. This was an affront to the symbol of our national honour. The scant regard displayed by our American guests for Gandhi’s samadhi is a rather fitting ‘tribute’ to our servility.

After Jessica
Apropos of the report Retrial plan puts defence in a spot (March 3), it is heartening to see the public mobilised against the Jessica Lall judgment. The media have taken every effort to expose the loopholes in the system, prompting the Delhi High Court to intervene.
But the process has raised some serious questions. Why is our judicial system so weak? Why can’t we make proper security arrangements for the witnesses? And why can’t we have time-bound trials? If the accused don’t get the punishment they deserve, what will its effect be on our people?

The initiative taken by Sonia Gandhi to get criminal laws amended in view of the Jessica Lall case is laudable. All of us feel oppressed by the cumbersome laws established by the British, which we still follow. Laws must be made simple, without any loopholes. The judicial and police set-up must be overhauled. Courts must be made to pass judgments within three months of the date of filing of cases.

No gentleman this
I was surprised to read Greg Chappell’s statement that Sourav Ganguly wants to remain captain only to earn money. The BCCI insists on discipline within the team, but it is the coach who is acting most irresponsibly. It is a pity that the training of our team lies in the hands of a man who repeatedly exceeds the limits of decency. It is now clear that Chappell’s objection to Ganguly’s inclusion in the Indian team is solely because of a personal grouse.
