Never considered for captaincy: Kumble

"I'm disappointed but never regretted. You can only be as good as the opportunities you get," said Kumble.

Champion leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who is now only the fifth bowler in Test history to claim 500 wickets, has expressed disappointment at not being considered for captaincy of the Indian cricket team.

"I am disappointed but never regretted the fact that I was never given the opportunity to lead the Indian side. You can only be as good as the opportunities you get," Kumble told a private news channel on Sunday.

Playing in his 105th Test, the bowler from Karnataka became the first Indian to reach the milestone of claiming 500 Test wickets when he bowled Stephen Harmison leg before wicket at Mohali in the second Test against England on Saturday.

Kumble also said he never tried to spin the ball the way Shane Warne or Muttiah Muralitharan was doing.

"I did try the orthodox way, but I was not successful. So, I decided to stick to my strengths."

He said he did not have anyone to fall back on except for legendary spinner B S Chandrasekhar, who he said helped him out.

Kumble is now looking forward to be a part of Indian team for the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.

"I would like to be a part of the 2007 World Cup squad.
