An MTech student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Warangal allegedly committed suicide after jumping from the seventh floor of the hostel building located on the institute's campus on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The 23-year-old deceased Ankur Bharadwaj, who belongs to Delhi, died on the spot in the incident, they said.

"It was still unclear what resorted him (Bharadwaj) to the extreme step of committing suicide," a senior police officer said, adding initial investigations said that he was a spiritual person.

However, he was confused as to whether to continue with his studies and become a professor or to become a saint, the officer added.

The officer also rejected reports in a section of the media that alleged ragging by seniors drove him to end his life.

Kazipet police are investigating the case further.
