Mining mafia had no role in the suspension of Gautam Budh Nagar sub-divisional magistrate Durga Shakti Nagpal and she was punished for demolishing a mosque wall which led communal tension in the area, Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav said on Wednesday.
Yadav, who is also PWD minister in the Akhilesh Yadav-led government in Uttar Pradesh, justified the government's decision while talking to reporters after a meeting here.
The 2009 batch IAS officer was suspended on July 27, hours after she ordered the demolition of the boundary wall of a mosque in Kadalpur village. Days before being suspended, Nagpal had cracked down on illegal mining activities in the district and got over two dozen FIRs registered against those involved in illegal sand mining along the floodplains of the Yamuna and Hindon rivers.
The minister said that the conduct of the officer was highly objectionable as it was fraught with serious communal trouble. He said the issue was discussed in Wednesday's meeting attended by SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and other senior leaders.
"Mining issue was not at all involved in the punishment to the officer" Yadav said, adding that some groups have been misleading people to serve vested interests.
Yadav said that a conspiracy was hatched by some people to create communal trouble in the minority-dominated village and instead of investigating into the complaint of outsiders over wall construction, the officer rushed to demolish it.
To a question about SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav asking for revoking Nagpal's suspension, Shivpal said he (Ramgopal) had only asked for a probe and the government would decide further course of action.
Yadav also said that the farmers on whose land the wall was constructed had never objected to it. "Instead of pulling down the mosque wall, the SDM should have talked to the villagers, Yadav said, adding that his government had given full protection and liberty to honest officers to discharge their duty.
Meanwhile, Nagpal has already reported to the board of revenue office, Lucknow, where she had been attached after suspension.
