How many times during your torturous twenties have you longed for a man to sweep you off your feet - Rhett Butler-style? How many times have you wished that Love Story happened to you (sans the death episode)?

No matter what there's seldom a girl worth her mascara, who has not wept over a paperback during her torturous twenties.

Even in the age of dutch-dates, just scratch a no-nonsense, professional woman and out she'll spew a volley of romances she swears by.

Led by a hunch, I sheepishly shot off a mail asking some seasoned-professional women friends if the good ol' romance still touched them.

Half expecting a volley of no-time-for-mush replies, I dared a bit further and asked them to name some of the intense tales that might have influenced their ideas of romance.

Pronto!

Gushing emails poured into my mailbox. Breathlessly the belles replied. Out of which, here I produce a top-ten list of all time top-pulp.

1.Gone with the Wind
2.Love Story
3.Wuthering Heights
4.Rebecca
5.Emma
6.The French Lieutenant’s Woman
7.Jane Eyre
8.Pride and Prejudice
9.Bridges of Madison County
10. A bunch of Mills and Boon novellas

Okay. So that is it. No matter what -- mush rules the female soul.
