Though Sonia Gandhi could not make it to the lunch, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari fondly recalled the bonding between Bhutto-Gandhi families when both Benazir and Rajiv Gandhi were prime ministers in the late 1980s.

Sources said that during Zardari's interaction with union home minister P Chidambaram, he recalled the warm relationship his family had with Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi met Benazir Bhutto and Asif Zardari in December 1988 during the SAARC summit and later at a bilateral summit on July 16-17, 1989.

Both Rajiv and Benazir died in terrorist attacks.
