TWO PASTORS of Kabitkhedi church were beaten up inside their residence on the church premises by local youths who suspected them of being involved in distribution of inflammable material. The incident occurred at around 9 am today.
According to Hira Nagar police, Dilip Rupalal a resident of Raghunandan Bag had seen one of the pastors Jojin P (then unidentified) distributing pamphlets encouraging conversion in the Pardeshipura area of the City on January 31. He had also been approached by Jojin to change his faith and had been offered Rs 1,000 for the same. Local youths had managed to snatch the inflammable material and lodged a complaint with the police submitting the seized material as proof on the same day.
Dilip apparently saw Jojin on the streets today and chased him. Dilip was soon joined by six other local youths who followed Jojin inside the church where he had his residential quarters. Jojin managed to close the main door behind him, which was, however, easily scaled by the youths following him. He then and locked himself in the toilet of his room.
The youths banged on the door of the room to get it opened and on not getting a response broke a portion of the same. At that moment Jojin’s room partner Jijo Davies, hearing the incessant knocking and banging on the door, opened it.
Both Jojin and Jijo were then beaten by the youths, who alleged that the former were misleading the public and inciting religious conflict. The assailants later left the room after threatening to call the police. Incidentally, two policemen had been posted near the church for its protection after heightened activity of alleged conversion by Christian missionaries were reported in the region.
The police identified four of the assailants as Dilip, Lalit, Vikram and Sunil. The first three mentioned above have been arrested under IPC Sections 451, 252, 506, 323, 427 and 34. The injured church workers were taken to MY Hospital for treatment.
Realising the sensitivity of the matter ASP Rajesh Hingankar, CSP Dilip Soni and Hira Nagar police station in-charge B S Parihar immediately reached the spot after receiving reports of the incident. The police officials have denied any destruction inside the church and said that by their prompt action the matter had been brought under control.
