Post Master General (PMG) Ashutosh Tripathi who joined the department here in June 2005 is making sincere efforts to improve the services of the Postal Department in order to provide better services to the customers.

In a tête-à-tête with Shivani Chaturvedi, Tripathi discusses various measures that have been taken by the department for betterment of its services.
What steps have been taken by the department to improve services to the public?
The department is trying to strengthen the already existing services that are being provided to the customers. In the last financial year we have computerised all the counter operations including savings bank and speed post services in Allahabad region. Through this facility the customers will be able to get better service in lesser time.
What measures have been taken by the department to compete with the private courier agencies?
People have perception that delivery of letters through post is often not in time. But here I would say that our services mostly depend on Railway and Airlines and when some problem crops up in their services then our services are also affected.
Since there is shortage of manpower in our department we are taking steps to computerise various operations while a few of them have already been computerised.
This will help in quicker services in lesser time to our customers. At the same time I would say that the recognised courier agencies often charge high rates which is undoubtedly costlier than ours.
What steps have been taken to improve services in rural areas?
This year we will be computerising 54 post offices of the region and under this majority of the rural areas will be covered.
Besides, in the financial year 2005-06 we have secured business of Rs 174.50 crore in Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) scheme which is meant for people of rural areas. This in itself proves that our services in rural areas have improved.
What are your future plans?
Logistic Posts will be started this year under which parcels weighing more than 35 kgs can also be carried easily at reasonable price. Besides, we are trying to increase our share in the insurance sector.
What are your contributions in successful handling of the affairs of the department since you joined here?
Steps have been taken to improve the services including timely delivery of letters. Besides, I have been trying my best to see to the complaints of the customers regarding letter delivery. Apart from this, the total revenue realisation of Allahabad region of the department has also gone up. In near future we will be focusing on providing proper and clean environment in post offices.
