Mass suicides by poverty-stricken families continue unabated in Purvanchal, despite government claims to uplift the poor and downtrodden families in the state.

Another bizarre incident in Bhadohi goes a long way to testify this fact.

A man in the throes of poverty served poison-laced food to his family members, including his 70-year-old mother before eating it himself at Raiyapur village under the Koirauna police station in Bhadohi on Sunday night. The incident came to light on Monday.

Mata Charan Mishra (47) and son Mohit (8) died while mother, Jagpatti Devi (70), sons Rahul (16), Soni (10), Rohit (9) and daughter Pooja (11), have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

According to information, after death of his wife caused by cancer three years back, Mata Charan had been living from hand to mouth. He had spent a lot of money in treating his wife.

He tried his best to meet the demand of his children and mother. However, he ended everything as he was finding it hard to carry on.

A frustrated and emotional Mata Charan reportedly himself cooked the meal for his family and served it to them in the night.

In the wee hours, some villagers heard screams of his children. They were taken aback to see Mata Chran and Mohit dead while four children and the elderly woman were vomiting. The villagers immediately rushed them to a hospital in Gopiganj area in Bhadohi.

On getting information, administrative officials and MLA, Vijaya Mishra rushed to the spot. Police collected the samples of the food and vomited matter for clinical test.

A 26-year-old youth, Chhotu Keshri, had also served poison to his three kids after consuming it himself in Kashi Pura in Varanasi around one and half months back. Chhotu and his three children had died.

Around six months back, a poor farmer had also done the same in Sarnath in Varanasi. The man and his two children had died.
