Seven rented tenements— three residential and four commercial — were attached in accordance with subdivisional magistrate (Sadar) Ritu Maheshwariri’s directives.

Tenants residing in the building since 1932 were told the property was being attached due to non-payment of land revenue.

The property belonged to the Waqf Board and a Maulavi sold the building to Dr OP Gupta’s son Manish on payment of Rs 10 lakh on stamp duty.

Meanwhile, the district administration carried out evaluation of the property and found it to be worth nearly Rs 24 lakh.

Taking serious note of heavy revenue loss, the subdivisional magistrate ordered attachment of the property.

The attachment of the property was done with immediate effect.

The tenants faced inconvenience due to attachment of their shops and residences.

Cawnpore Engineering Stores proprietor S D Nayar told Hindustan Times that attachment of the property was illegal, because a case was already pending in the Allahabad High Court, where they had challenged the sale of Waqf Board property to Manish Kumar four years ago.

These tenants met the subdivisional magistrate and lodged a strong protest.

They tried to contact the district magistrate, but to no avail.

Meanwhile, tenants demanded immediate revocation of attachment proceedings.
Besides, the tenants also sought a high-level probe into the sale of Waqf Board
property.
